Reduce the amount of time students spend on NETFLIX during their exam period?
For my second project as Ironhacker I have to add a feature on the app of my choice according to a brief.
I choose Netflix mobile application because I use it daily and I love the design!
The brief ➯ Make students watch less Netflix during their exam period.
Target ➯ Students who are using Netflix mobile application.
MARKET RESEARCH
Direct competitors (Prime video — Disney+ — OCS) : All of them have the same features as Netflix, not the same target but same service.
Indirect competitors (Youtube — PUBG mobile — TV time) All indirect competitors are providing customized content but none of them allow you to download video. I decided to insert PUBG in my indirect competitors because it is one of the most famous mobile game this year, a lot of student spend their time on this app instead whatching Netflix.
Netflix has a high level of customized profile and digitized content with the most extensive library, but it is one of the most expensive applications, instead of 3 indirect competitors which are free. Other direct competitors are closed to Netflix and improve year after year their platform.
Netflix: 193M of subscriber all over the world
Prime: 150M all over the world
Disney+: 57,7M all over the world
OCS: 3M in France
USER RESEARCH
Interview? 👦👩🧒👧🧑
- Are you using Netflix mobile app?
- Are you watching Netflix during your exam period? (too often or responsibly)
- If Netflix would propose a solution to prevent you from watching Netflix would you be interested?
- For a new feature would you be ok to add 1€ to your monthly subscription?
Most of interviewees told me that my second question was not possible because it does not correspond to Netflix’s policy. According to these answers I modified my question: If Netflix would propose a solution to help you to manage your connectivity during the exam period would you be interested? Like a specific platform on Netflix with a virtual calendar for selecting your exam dates.
The challenge
4 interviewees were really interested about this type of feature, but the feature has to follow specific points:
● Let the student have the power to take its own decision, stop watching Netflix or not! 😎
● 1 student was not motivated about the brief, so I have to find a cool and interesting motivation in my feature! 🤩
● Create a digitized and fun feature! Young people are spending a lot of time on their phone and are used to high quality interfaces! 👩💻
PROBLEM STATEMENT: A feature that helps student to manage their study/ chill time on Netflix and focus on their exam, through an educational and digitale platform.
THE NEW FEATURE
I decided to create a second plateforme on the mobile application Netflix, called NetMotiv. The student will be able to switch from one platform to another through a specific step and button.
On this new plateforme, educational and learning contents will be available, presented with same design and categories as Netflix ➯It is important to not lose the student and prompt him/her to discover this feature
The addition of a virtual calendar is necessary ➯This calendar allows students to select their exam dates.
Thanks to this calendar NetMotiv will propose a study schedule to the student ➯he/she can modify it at any time.
After all these steps, the student can active or not a specific option if he wants to go deeper into its exam focus
😎OPTION
● Students have access to NetMotiv only during study hours (possibility to active or desactive this option)
🤩MOTIVATION
● To encourage them not to be too tempted by Netflix, notifications will sometimes appear to remind them that it’s time to work.
● If the student follows correctly its study schedule he/she will receive points. Thanks to these points the student will have access to specific gifts/ promotions offered by the application.
● The student will have access to its accumulated points and gifts on a specific page available on NetMotiv interface.
Is my mid-fi feature fit with their wish? 🤔
I presented my mid-fi to the interviewees trying to notice if they could navigate fluently through my feature. I was able to highlight on each stage the points to be modified this evening in terms of design, navigation or comprehension.
● One user told me it will be interesting to add a NetMotiv profile directly on the profile page. If the user doesn’t login he/she could go directly to the platform without having to go through Netflix.
● An interviewee already asked me at the mid-fi stage to think about putting a logo, a specific colour for the NetMotiv interface. So that the user can see the digital portal. According to this comment I decided to use the blue color for NetMotiv, keep the “N” but change the color.
● Change the “money” icon into a “gift” icon because the user may be misled and not understand that he has to click on this icon to get his gifts and earned promotions.
● For my mid-fi I put on the same page daily calendar and time study schedule but two users told me that it would be clearer to separate the two steps.
● I decided to add the “next step” button and “previous step” button to make it easier for users to navigate the interface.
● “50 points” looks too much like a button so in my hi-fi prototype I will remove the border.
● One student asked me what happens after clicking on the button “use it”. To reply to its request on the hi-fi I will change “use it” into “spend it”.
● I decided to add another step after this one to show more details about promotions and gifts to the user.
FINAL PROTOTYPE
After collecting of these comments I have made corrections on the hi-fi prototype. 🤗 I showed this new prototype to the interviewees and got a lot of positive feedback on the design and the concept of feature.
WHAT I LEARNED?
I loved working on this project! Trying to find this feature was a challenge I had a lot of fun creating the NetMotiv concept! ❤️
Speaking with different people allows me to improve my feature and go further in the details. I worked with 2 people for ideation, that was really interesting to discover their vision of the initial brief through their ideas.
The time went by too fast, one week to carry out this project was intense! But I am happy of the result even if it is not perfect for sure!
Hope you enjoyed it, thank you for your attention 😇
